Answers about downloading, installing and using these apps.
Downloading and installing
Which file should I download?
On an app’s page, choose your platform and then a package. The Download button updates to match your choice.
- MSI or EXE: a Windows installer. Pick either one, not both.
- Portable ZIP: runs on Windows without installing. Extract the whole ZIP first.
- DEB: an installer for Ubuntu.
How do I install an app?
Each app’s page lists the requirements and steps for the package you selected, under “Requirements and installation”.
On Windows, open the file you downloaded. On Ubuntu, open a terminal in the folder where you saved the file and run this, using your file’s name:
sudo apt install ./file-name.debWhy does Windows warn me about the installer?
These apps are not code-signed, so Windows can’t confirm who published them and may show a warning.
Only use files downloaded from this site, and check the file’s checksum first. If anything looks wrong, don’t run the file, and send me an email.
How do I check that my download is intact?
Each app’s page shows a SHA-256 checksum for the selected file. Create the same checksum on your computer, then compare the two.
On Windows, in PowerShell:
Get-FileHash .\file-name.exe -Algorithm SHA256On Ubuntu:
sha256sum file-name.debThe two values should match exactly. If they don’t, delete the file and download it again.
How do I uninstall an app?
On Windows, close the app and remove it in Settings, under Apps and then Installed apps. For a portable ZIP, delete its folder.
On Ubuntu, close the app and run the command for it:
sudo apt remove javalite
sudo apt remove keyvibes
sudo apt remove lancast
sudo apt remove lancast-viewerYour settings and files are kept in case you reinstall. Before removing KeyVibes, turn off Launch at login and stop its sound engine with keyvibes-service --stop.
JavaLite
View JavaLiteJavaLite can’t find Java or won’t compile
JavaLite uses a full JDK that you install separately. A JRE alone can’t compile programs.
On Ubuntu, you can install one with:
sudo apt install default-jdkOn Windows, install a JDK from its vendor. Then choose its folder in JavaLite, under Settings and Guided Java setup. It’s the folder containing bin\java.exe and bin\javac.exe.
Does JavaLite support Maven or Gradle?
Not in this version. JavaLite works with ordinary Java source projects. Maven, Gradle, Java modules, automatic dependencies and debugging aren’t supported yet.
How do I type input into my program?
While your program runs, type a line in the box below the Console and press Enter. This works with Scanner and BufferedReader. EOF closes the program’s input, and Stop ends the program.
KeyVibes
View KeyVibesI can’t hear anything
Select a switch and try Hear switch. If that’s silent, check your system volume and the Output setting in Sound studio.
Previews work, but typing in other apps is silent
Sounds across other apps stay off until you allow them. In Keyboards, select your keyboard. Then choose Enable sounds in Sound studio and approve the notice. On Windows, also choose Apply changes.
On Ubuntu, this also needs a GNOME session, and your account needs read access to that keyboard, which Ubuntu commonly withholds. KeyVibes never changes permissions itself. After installing, you’ll find the guide at:
/usr/share/doc/keyvibes/docs/input-permissions.mdDoes KeyVibes record what I type?
No. Typed text and key sequences are not recorded, rebuilt or sent anywhere. Password fields in other Wayland apps can’t be detected reliably, so pause sounds before you enter one.
LANCast
View LANCastWhich installer do I need?
Choose Host & viewer if this computer will share its screen. Choose Viewer-only if it will only watch. On Ubuntu, install one or the other, because the two packages can’t be installed together.
I can’t find a session
- Check that the host has opened a lobby.
- Connect both computers to the same private network by Ethernet or Wi-Fi. VPNs and virtual adapters can’t be used.
- Select that network’s adapter in LANCast, then refresh the list.
- If the session still doesn’t appear, connect with the host’s address and port, usually in the form 192.168.1.10:47100.
A manual address can’t get past guest Wi-Fi isolation or separated network segments. Your network has to allow the computers to reach each other.
I’m connected, but there’s no picture
A request to join stays pending until the host approves it, and it expires after two minutes. Once approved, the picture appears when the host selects a source and chooses Start broadcasting.
If it still doesn’t appear, a firewall may be blocking video. LANCast doesn’t change firewall rules. Your network administrator can allow these on the selected private network:
- TCP 47100 into the host
- UDP 49152–49215 on both the host and viewer, between their LAN addresses
- UDP 5353 for automatic discovery
